Have you ever relied on pure adrenaline and hope in the last 10 minutes of a game? Well, the Wilsonville girls’ soccer team experienced this exact scenario. Tualatin’s soccer team brought the heat in a tough match against the Wildcats, but Wilsonville persevered.
The Cats were down 1-0 in the first half, with everyone’s confidence down. Camryn Schaan states that “we just needed to pick it up and go win the game, because in the previous season vs Tualatin, we beat them 6-1, and we knew what we were capable of winning in the second half.”
The team regrouped during halftime and discussed the game plan. They approached the second half ready to be victorious.
Schaan dribbled through the defense; the whistle pierced the air as a foul was called, rewarding a free kick to the Cats. The final 10 minutes of the game crept up, slowly giving all hope into the chance of making the goal.
Everyone was shocked that Schann wasn’t taking it, especially because she drew the foul. Instead, freshman Bella Moultrie lined up for the shot.
Again, the whistle goes.
Score! With points tied up, both teams were hungry for the win. Everyone competed to their fullest, trying to score with every chance they got. Seconds ticked by, and now, the Cats raced the clock.
Schaan took the keeper on in a 1 vs. 1 in the final 3 minutes. Luckily, Schaan secured the goal, bringing the Wildcats back into the lead at 2:1.
Coach Alex Boehm encouraged from the sideline, but still had to keep focused so the team wouldn’t let up. “After we scored the second goal, the attention was on closing the game out. We defined that by game management and slowing down,” she shared.
The whistle blew, and the Wildcats came out on top! Coach Boehm declared, “I’m very proud of how we were able to close out and win the game.”
Media producer and teacher at Wilsonville High School, Mr. Fitz, witnessed the goals and reflects, “I was super excited because after being behind most of the game, we finally got one up on the board.” Mr. Fitz, along with many supportive fans, applauds the Wildcats for their defeat; not only in the record book, but also with the spirit of perseverance and resilience.
It’s said that the aggressive team always wins, but the Cats have proven that champions can also compete with class, chemistry, and, more importantly, charisma.
