At Wilsonville High School, the Asian Pacific Islander (API) Club is more than a student organization, as it’s a space where students of all backgrounds can learn about, celebrate, and share Asian and Pacific Islander cultures. From fun events to food, music, and cultural activities, the club provides a welcoming environment where students can connect, explore identity, and have fun together.
Students join the API Club for many reasons. For some, it’s a chance to connect with others who share similar cultural backgrounds. “Something I’ve learned from being in API is that we have similar cultures that allow us to connect easily,” says Marcellino Vu, a sophomore.
Others are curious about different cultures, eager to learn through events like cultural showcases, heritage month celebrations, and discussion panels. “API is great at welcoming everyone into their space and opening up their events or fundraisers to everyone. The club is very inclusive and invites everyone to join,” adds junior Julie Murray.
The club also provides leadership opportunities. Students can organize events, lead communication efforts, or manage social media, gaining skills that extend beyond the school year.
They even host a variety of activities throughout the year, reflecting the rich diversity of Asian and Pacific Islander communities. Some recent highlights include origami lanterns, make-your-own-springroll, and even a Labubu raffle!
“My favorite API event was the boba fundraiser! It was organized very neatly, and was planned far enough ahead that people could order online, or in person,” says Murray.
Beyond the activities, the API Club fosters a sense of belonging. Students often form friendships through shared experiences, collaborative projects, and lively discussions about culture, identity, or current events affecting API communities.
For some members, it’s the first time they feel represented in a school club. “API has definitely felt like a safe place since it’s just another way for me to hang out with friends,” explains Vu.
The club also serves as a safe space to discuss challenges, such as cultural misunderstandings, stereotyping, or navigating identity in a diverse school environment. Peer support and mentorship from older students or faculty advisors are key parts of the club’s mission.
So how would you get involved? Well, joining is simple. Meetings are typically held every other Wednesday during lunch in Room 203, and newcomers are always welcome. No prior experience or knowledge of Asian or Pacific Islander culture is required. Only curiosity, respect, and a willingness to participate are all it takes.
To sum it up, whether you join to celebrate your heritage, learn about others, or simply make new friends, the API Club offers a unique opportunity to engage with culture, leadership, and community.
