AI… It’s everywhere, seeping into every corner of the internet, especially in anything that involves creativity. This huge presence of AI has proven to be an issue throughout recent years.
As AI has grown, it has caused fear for many people. People all around the world fear that it will replace art and take over jobs. While these fears are quite reasonable, AI has its perks. It actually does help, especially in the creative process.
Some people don’t really have the skill or sometimes even the energy to create art. AI, though, has allowed people to express more of their creativity, even if they don’t have the skill for it.
Ms. Lords, a digital arts teacher at Wilsonville High School, was interviewed on the matter of AI in the creative process. When asked about it, she said, “What’s nice about AI is that it helps people use their imagination, even if they don’t have the skillset to make it happen.”
Along with being able to help people express their creativity, AI is also able to help people come up with new ideas.
There are many websites on the internet that allow people to use AI to come up with ideas. Usually done in the form of prompts, it gives people the ability to create something of their own, even if they’re not quite sure what.
In an article by the School of Professional Studies, it was stated that “Writers and poets can benefit from AI-generated text prompts, which can kickstart the writing process.”
Of course, while AI does have its upsides, it also has its downsides. While AI is able to come up with prompts and generate things for people, it has also been found that, after a while, the stuff that AI generates becomes repetitive.
The MIT Technology Review published an article in which they researched the use of AI. During the research, they had three groups of people each write a story. Each group was allowed to use a different amount of AI.
At the end of the study, it was found that AI-generated stories eventually became repetitive, tending to be similar to one another.
While AI, after a while, starts to become repetitive, that doesn’t mean that it poses no threat. To people in the creative industry, it has been a threat to their jobs for a while. Along with being a threat to people’s jobs, it’s also a threat to people’s creativity.
Mr. Lunden, another digital arts teacher at Wilsonville High School, was interviewed on the use of AI. When asked about the use of AI, he said, “People will stop trying to create their own ideas”, and, “I do think it’s gonna take people’s jobs.”
While AI is a tool, it can also be harmful when used too much. It can drain people’s creativity as people start to rely on it too much to make stuff for them.
AI has also proven to be a threat to people’s jobs, as companies can use AI to create promotional material without having to pay someone actually to make it.
Overall, AI itself is not bad. It can be used in good ways, yet it also has negative effects. So, AI is fine as a tool in the creative process, but it’s just best not to rely on it.
