Wilsonville High School JV football team has been very solid the past decade under head coach Matt Humphries, with only 5 total games. This year is a fresh start with new sophomores and freshmen on the team. This year’s team could arguably be one of the best in the state.
The wildcats JV team has already outscored their opponents 247-27 in only six games, meaning on average they score about 41.17 points per game. Wilsonville has three more games on the season with Aloha, McNary, and McKay coming up next.
Wilsonville’s Sophomore, JV star LJ Leland, is one of the best players on this team. Gifted with the perfect build with a solid height of 6’1 and the ideal length of arms, being able to reach and grab any ball out of the sky.
Leland has caught 17 balls for a total of 913 yards through 6 weeks. That leads the team in receiving yards. Not only is he an asset on the offensive side, but he wreaks havoc on offenses as a free safety.
Leland stated, “Being my first year playing for Wilsonville, it’s been a great season. This team makes it really easy to adapt to…I believe we have the strength to win two more state championships before I graduate.” Wilsonville’s confidence is through the roof when it comes to winning another championship.
Over the past few years, Wilsonville’s core strength has been its leadership, as well as its team motto, “first class, do your job.” Cole Burton, the sophomore team QB, is a pure example of this. Burton is by far one of Wilsonville’s standout players on the field.
Burton stated, “It’s not just about making plays for me… It’s about ensuring everyone believes in one another. That’s what makes us a team, and that’s what makes this feel like a family.” Wilsonville’s leadership proves why they’ve been so good.
Wilsonville’s raw talent and leadership skills can take them to many more state championships in the coming years. With players like Leland and Burton at the top of this program and one of the state’s best coaching staffs, there is no doubt that winning will be a problem.
