Wilsonville’s football team has a strong reputation for being three-time state champions, but this season, they plan on making it four. The boys are in the heat of their season, standing at a record of 5-1 on the road to the playoffs.
Not everything is all sunshine for our Wildcats, though. Curtis Karr tells us about some of the challenges that the team is facing,
“I would say that Romans’ injury in the jamboree was a big hit to our team, and also the summit game. It was a hard-fought game, and there were some undisciplined moments early in the 2 halves that gave them just too big a lead for us to come back from.”
One of his teammates, Trevor Glos, gives more of his insight on how things are going,
“Summit was a rough one, and then our starting center, Chandler Brock, got injured the last couple of practices, and he’s been recovering from that. But Brixton Carpenter stepped up for us big time against Forest Grove, but we are just hoping to get Chandler back as soon as possible.”
While the Wildcats may have come out on a rough start, they have fought their way back. Although the first game against Sandy definitely stood out the most to the players, when I spoke with them.
The comeback that took place that night is one not to forget. Glos felt the pressure, trying to defend Randall for our home opener,
“The last drive we were down a lot, 20 to 6. And then the defense really locked in, got the offense the ball. We drove down and scored, and in the final drive, we drove 80 yards, and I got the ball to my receivers, they blocked for me, and we scored. We got back in the game and won”.
While Glos had his moment, Karr had his too. “We were down 14 points against Hillsboro, and had to pick it up. That’s a team we shouldn’t be down on. We shouldn’t even be letting them score.”
When asked what the ideal outcome in that situation is, Karr said, “We had to pick that up. I feel like working together as a team was a big moment for us to show what we could be this year.”
With hard moments like the Summit game, the team continues to get better. The team is well prepared for any other curveballs thrown their way. The plan in practice is to raise the bar every day.
Wilsonville has some pretty big goals, but Glos says his biggest goal is “trying to win the ‘ship.”
Karr also has the same idea in mind: “A state championship is for sure my biggest goal. I feel like that’s the answer everyone would say. I would also say the team just coming together and playing as a team and being at our highest level is always my goal.”
This year, the Wildcats are stepping up their game, and Karr provides us with insight. “We are really close as a team, and I feel like when we play together, we just work really well. And we are all really close to each other.”
Glos agrees with his teammate, “The connection of the team is like no other. There are no levels to the team; no one is above another, no one is beneath another. We are a unit, we are a family, and we are getting things done this season.”
Wilsonville anticipates another championship at the end of the season, but for now, they are playing it game by game.
