In a grade brimming with talented visual artists it can be difficult to stand out, but that’s exactly what Junior Maile Campos does. The otherworldly subjects of her pieces are rendered in dusky graphite, creating an atmosphere leagues different than that of her fellow artists. All advanced art students are required to choose a concentration for their work for the year, a theme connecting all their pieces together and Campos chose a concentration that would be very restrictive to work in, that not just any artist could tackle: the Seven Deadly Sins. Each of her pieces depict non human beings who represent one of the sins.

Tell me about your concentration! How did you land on seven deadly sins?

I have always been interested in human nature and religious things, so I was like, why not do my monster-esque style with religious references.

You work primarily in graphite and charcoal, why is this your favorite medium to work in?

I like to control things, and I feel like graphite is one of the few mediums that I can completely control. I also love how complex I can make things, or even make pieces super simple. I might not have as much control with charcoal, but they have deeper blacks which I really enjoy. It also has an angelic, soft look to it.

What piece has been your favorite to work on?

I think pride has been my favorite so far. It took a lot of thinking and traced me through some old memories. It was refreshing.

What pieces are you working on going forward this semester?

I want to work on my gluttony and wrath pieces this next semester, but I don’t want to ruin the image.

What art knowledge have you gained from being in art four?

I’m slow and sometimes I need to just pump stuff out. I’ve also learned that it’s good to play with materials to see how they interact with my style.

For future concentrations, what themes would you like to explore?

It’s kind of odd and completely different, but I really want to explore character archetypes.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

GOD AND JAMES CHARLES. Just kidding, but seriously, I don’t really have many people that I draw inspiration from. Maybe not a specific person, but like what others enjoy, or how they think. It intrigues me!
