It is a new year which means it is filled with a lot of new possibilities and changes. This 19-20 school year, Wilsonville High School got a new administration. With that, the school is changing a little bit more structurally. I was able to sit down with our new school principal, Kelly Schmidt and Assistant Principal, Tate Olsen, to ask what the changes were, if any. As well as, why they were put in place.

           During the interview, it was eye-opening. As a student at the school, it is really different, fundamentally. But that didn’t mean new policies, it is simply just more clearly communicated. Being able to sit down with our principal, and Assistant Principal, I was able to have a bigger understanding of why many students think there are “new” policies. To crush the rumors, there were not any added policies, they were just more clearly stated. For example, the school had changed last year, like the assigned parking. At the beginning of this 19-20 school year, students that can drive usually apply for parking. This year it was partly based off past attendance. It makes sense to give a parking pass to someone who shows up to school everyday then to someone who doesn’t come to school. That is where we get the message that we need to come to school 90% of the time. The one change we did have this year was hall passes.

           During the interview, the question was “ Why were hall passes added?” They both collaboratively answered that the hall passes were for safety and security. It is easier to tell, from an admin standpoint, with a hall pass that everyone knows what class they are in, and what they are doing. This change doesn’t mean that the admin will have a constant eye on you, but it just makes the admin aware that people are where they need to be. Overall, there are not any new policies, the school is just communicating more clearly. Which will still make for a good school year.
