How far is too far?

Wildcat student section supporting their volleyball team.

Recently, schools have sent out information on student sections getting out of hand with what kids are saying. Sure, cheering and taunting does come with being a part of the student section, but only light-hearted, funny, and non offensive remarks. When race or gender is being used to target players, that is when it has been taken too far.

Fortunately, this is not occurring at Wilsonville High School due to our administrators who monitor what our student section is saying and make sure we are always supporting our fellow Wildcats and remaining positive.

School districts who have faced this problem and OSAA believe that the districts need to communicate, listen, and resolve so that students can enjoy events and enjoy traveling to go play at different schools.

We need to keep our student sections positive, encouraging, and motivating. We need a positive environment in student sections that refrains from bullying, racial slurs, or any judgmental and hurtful comments. It is better to have positive student section support rather than no student section at all.
