The Wilsonville boys varsity golf team has had a beyond-successful season this year. The team scored second place in the state, and individual player Michael Flaherty scored first place in the state as an individual; the Wildcats’ golf team has seen a lot of success in 2023.

From May fifteenth through May sixteenth, the players participated in the tournament and anxiously anticipated their final ranking. This year, as previously mentioned, Wilsonville scored second place as a team, with a combined team score of eighty over par.

Along with the high team placement, the Varsity Golf team was in for more success. The five players on the team were Micheal Flaherty, Max Nelson, Luke Sidhu, Lu Nguyen, and Evan Hoobler, and the sophomore Flaherty tied for first in the state with the lowest score, shooting a twelve-over par within two rounds of golf.

Amazing overall team performance is what makes Wilsonville such a formidable foe when it comes to golf. Our journalists interviewed the head coach, Ryan Day, on some inquiries about the season, and then subsequently were given an interview from Micheal Flaherty on some of his personal thoughts about the season.

Coach Day explained his overall thoughts and opinions surrounding this year’s performance, stating, “Overall, our season was an incredible success! Our coaching staff did incredible work with the team. Our first goal was to win the NWOC, which we did in a close battle with LaSalle. We would have loved to have brought home the State Championship, but our goal was to podium this season, and to be leading after day one with a solid 2nd day showing, we couldn’t have asked for more. Being a State Championship runner-up and having the Individual Co-Champion was incredible.”

Flaherty, when asked what it took to beat many teams and secure our ranking on the podium, responded, “It kinda took us all coming together as a team and putting some good scores down together to beat them.”

Overall this season was a tremendous success and the golf team exemplifies the Wildcat Spirit. With such a young team, Wilsonville boys golf has a fantastic chance of doing incredible things in the future. Stay tuned to see if they will be able to lock in the State Champion title next year.
