Many talented artists use one medium, be it acrylics or graphite, and rarely venture beyond the familiar. Senior Honour Colby is cut from a different cloth than those artists. She paints in acrylics and creates sculptures from materials that include farm equipment, and recently she has gotten into pastels. Despite this range, her voice and love of architecture is evident in all of her diverse work. I sat down with her to discuss her inspiration and plans for the future.

Isaac Boger: You work with a lot of different mediums, what is your newest obsession?

Honour Colby: The newest medium I’ve been working with is chicken wire because you can do alot of different things with it. You just cut it up!  It sounds kind of redneck, but it’s super useful for sculpture/3-D design.

IB: What themes do you want to explore in AP sculpture?

HC: For my concentration, I want to explore architecture and its interactions with the natural environment and negative space.

IB: What colleges are you looking to get into for design and architecture?

HC: My first choice is Rhode Island School of Design, but I’m also very interested in Parsons, Columbia, USC, and Cooper Union.

IB: How does architecture influence your non-sculptural art?

HC: Thinking about my art in reference to architecture makes me think spatially with three dimensions in mind and it definitely shapes the style that I do all my pieces in, whether it’s drawing or painting.

IB: Who are your favorite artists?

HC: One of my favorite artists is Christo because his installations are just so gigantic and so many people are influenced by them because they’re right up in your face. I also like that some of the work that he does has serious meanings but a lot of it is just cool stuff there to be enjoyed.

IB: What are your favorite colors to use?

HC: My number one color to use is black. It really invades all aspects of my life including my clothes its very thinning, very strong. Red is a powerful color that I use in almost every piece I complete. I also am interested in metallics, especially in sculpture. Glitter is also important in general.

IB: What is your favorite thing to depict in paintings?

HC: A lot of the time when I’m doing portraits I do a woman with short hair because that’s just a powerful image for me. I do a lot of pieces inspired by architecture and form in general

IB: Finally, What do you do to relax?

HC: To relax I go to concerts where I don’t know anyone so I can do whatever I want and just have my senses completely filled with stimuli. I also like to sit in coffee houses and people watch!
