The Wilsonville Cross Country team took a road trip down to Eugene this past Friday to race in the 5A State Meet.

Held at Lane Community College, the cross country team had competed there almost exactly two months prior, with only one slight change in the course: the addition of a steep downhill and uphill, yet the rest of the course remained the same.

Parents crowded the hillside that lined the track, where runners would finish with a 300 meter and roaring from those parents and fans helped push runners that final stretch.

Wilsonville’s boys team placed fourth in the state, with spectacular races by many of their top runners. Freshman Mason Weisgerber finished first for Wilsonville with a time of 16:26 and Jacob McClelland followed just a second after; both runners got new PRs. Ben Sheirbon, Josh Aguilar, Sebastian Pinger and Nathan Wilde also got their personal records, which in turn lead to the boys placing higher than speculated.

On the girls’ side, all top five runners ran their fastest races of the season as well, with Sarah Somerscales PRing by almost a minute. Projected to get fourth, Wilsonville Girls ended up placing third by one point. Samantha Prusse and Gabriella Prusse both finished top ten, with Sydney Burns close behind.

With two first place in league plaques and a third place in state plaque, Wilsonville’s hard work this season prevails.
