Girls soccer sucker punches Canby on senior night

Wilsonville dominated Canby on senior night, beating them 4-0 and Kenley Whittaker pulling through with 2 goals.

Another electric senior night at Wilsonville High School took place on Thursday the 28th as the Wilsonville Wildcats hosted the Canby Cougars.

Wilsonville (the defending 5a state champions) came into the matchup with a overall record of 8-5-1 and a league record of 6-0-1, Wilsonville came into the matchup being the 6 seed and one of the better teams in 5a. Meanwhile Canby came into the game being 5-8 overall and having a league record of 4-3. Canby needed a win as they were the 21st ranked team in 5a and fighting for a playoff spot.

Wilsonville dominated through out the night. A 4-0 score does look good for Wilsonville as they head into the playoffs– the goals were scored by Cameryn Schaan, Tegan Waters, and Kenley Whittaker, who scores twice. It was an overall great night for the Wilsonville program. The feeling was put into words by Cassie Wedin: “Excited to celebrate being a senior, but it’s sad because I don’t want to leave them.” Another senior, Kate Giese, also put into words how sad she is to be leaving the team soon, “It’s heart wrenching to leave the team I have been so close with.”

Being a senior can bring up so many emotions for players Wilsonville had a great night by celebrating them as well as coming out on top against a league rival that had to feel good to beat. With a win that hopefully boosts confidence for this fantastic Wildcats squad this team looks to make a deep run in the 5a girls soccer playoffs like they did last year.

Heading into the playoffs Wilsonville is the #6 seed and will play Woodburn in the first round, that game will take place on November 2nd at a time TBD. Wilsonville looks to defend their state crown but will have to do so from a lower seed this year. We will see what they can do as their playoff run begins.
