Unified Sports at WVHS

Keenan Sanford, Staff Writer

Unified Basketball is part of the Special Olympics and there is a unified team full of hardworking young men and women at WVHS! It features students in Special Needs programs at Wilsonville along with their allies.

A group with a healthy mixture of all grades, freshman through seniors, have been practicing and playing a game that they love. They play against other Unified teams in the area such as West Linn, Forest Grove, and Parkrose among others.

Me and fellow WBN member, Cole Hubka, had the great opportunity to announce the Unified Basketball team against the WVHS Staff. It was a neck-and-neck game until the 4th quarter when the Unified team pulled away for the win.

I sat down with two of the players on the Unified squad, Senior Mikey and Sophomore Bryce. I asked them about what their favorite part of Unified was and Mikey responded with “playing sports with friends” and Bryce responded with “being with friends.” They both love basketball as well. “I love making shots into the hoops.” Says Bryce. “I like draining threes.” Says Mikey, who is one of the better shooters on the team.

They have been preparing for the big tournament at the end of the season which they will host. And they’ve been having fun doing it!
